Joshua Berg and Mark Albain present Digressions an exhibition and book that weave through an unspecific space that unfolds through experiences, relationships, and histories growing up and living in the Midwest. Anchored in the liminal, Digressions is structured around written correspondence and recorded conversations between Berg and Albain (as well as friends, family, and colleagues). The recorded conversations are unscripted and undirected to allow freedom, authenticity, and chance. This loose framework provides an elusive sensation, the closest way to articulate an unspecific feeling of the immediate and moving through place.  

The threshold of change and transformation thread through the narrative, exploring the boundaries of experience in the Midwest. The interconnectedness forms the fabric of the exhibition and corresponding printed publication, revealing the intricate and interwoven nature of relationships, histories, and day-to-day domestic life. Rooted in the personal and familial spheres, these voices delve into the mundane yet profound aspects that contribute to a broader understanding of the Midwest. This attempt at documentation encapsulates moments of transition, uncertainty, and the in-between, mirroring the essence of the unspecific yet deeply personal space that shapes the lives of those who call the Midwest home.
